Social Justice and Peace
Social Justice and Peace Committee
Of Christ the King Parish, Richland WA
Mission
The mission of the Social Justice and Peace Committee is to serve as a resource and catalyst for the work of social justice, peace, and stewardship of the environment.
Definitions
Social justice denotes pursuit of the common good through respect for all people, equitable representation of all, and equitable sharing of resources.
Peace denotes harmonious relationships among individuals, groups, and nations and nonviolent responses to conflicts that arise.
Stewardship of the environment denotes activities that protect God's creation and conserve resources.
Principles
Working for social justice, peace, and stewardship of the environment involves education, advocacy, and action to influence policies, structures, and institutions so they work toward the common good and a peaceful society.
Education, advocacy, and action will be based on Catholic teachings on social justice, peace, and the environment. These teachings call us to examine our attitudes and ourselves.
The committee will pursue issues and actions that address:
- human life and dignity;
- the value of differences in ethnicity, gender, race, religion, and ability;
- the rights of all people, especially those who are socially, politically, or economically disadvantaged;
- nonviolence in personal, community, and global relationships;
- stewardship of God's creation.
The committee’s work will be based on our relationship with God and supported by the prayer and sacramental life of the committee and parish. The committee may work with other parishes, churches, and organizations to pursue common interests.
